12th Century BlabyThe first record of the existence of a church in Blaby is in 1140 when William de Lodbroke gave the right of presentation of the Church of Blaby to the newly founded Abbey of Leicester. This was a long time before any part of the present Church was built. But there must have been some building doing duty as a place of worship for the villagers and also some pastoral administration. Countesthorpe was linked with Blaby as one parish and remained so until 1878. 13th Century BlabyAmong those who held land in Blaby in this century were John de Blaby of the Lodbroke family, Simon de Montfort and the Abbot of Leicester. The Pope seems to have had his share in Blaby also, for we read that Blaby Church with its chapel of Countesthorpe was rated in 1290 at £20 in Pope Nicholas's valuation. |
